Sheikh Jamaluddin said the sultanate was targeting an increase in regional tourists from Malaysia and Singapore to compensate for the likely drop from destinations where RBA suspended flights to recently. Return flights to Shanghai were pulled on April 26, followed by Sydney and Bali on May 31.
The NTO is targeting a 15 per cent increase in air arrivals for 2008. Last year, it received 178,000 air arrivals.
RBA’s suspension of flights to Shanghai is a big blow as China is a rising market for the sultanate, with arrivals by air from China alone growing 48.14 per cent to 29,958 last year. China is now Brunei’s second largest market, after Malaysia. The NTO would not participate in consumer and trade shows in Shanghai from 2009, Sheikh Jamaluddin said.
